Frequently asked questions.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
Not at all. Many of our clients aren’t confident swimmers—and that’s okay! Your safety and comfort are my top priorities. Underwater sessions are designed for all levels of ability. We work in shallow, controlled environments where you can always touch the bottom or hold onto something nearby. I also always have a safety person close by who can help at any time. You’ll be guided gently through every step of the process, with plenty of breaks above water. You don’t need to swim—you just need to breathe, relax, and trust the magic.
Do I need to open my eyes underwater or put my face underwater?
Nope—you absolutely don’t have to. Some clients love the ethereal look of open eyes, while others prefer the serenity of closed lids. Both are beautiful. We’ll discuss what feels comfortable for you before we begin, and during the session, you’re always in control. If you'd like to try opening your eyes and putting your head underwater, I’ll guide you gently and take it at your pace. If not, we’ll focus on dreamy, soulful imagery with your eyes closed and/or your face above water. There’s no right or wrong—just what feels right for you.
What should I wear?
Think flowing, dreamy, and comfortable. Fabrics like chiffon, lace, silk, and tulle move beautifully in the water and create that signature ethereal look. Long dresses, skirts, or loose pieces with movement are ideal. Solid colors and soft tones tend to photograph best underwater, but we’ll also chat about what feels like you—your personality matters just as much as your wardrobe.
Underneath, I recommend wearing a nude or black bathing suit, bikini, or even bra and panties—whatever feels secure and comfortable for you. These options work well under sheer or lightweight fabrics and won’t distract from the overall image.
If you’re unsure what to bring, don’t worry—I offer styling guidance before your session and can help you select or source pieces that align with your vision. You’re also welcome to bring a few outfit options to the shoot, and we’ll choose together.
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident, free, and a little bit magical.
How long do photoshoots typically last?
While there is no time limit for my underwater portrait sessions, they typically last around 1 hour or so, depending on your comfort, energy, and the number of looks we’re capturing. We start slowly, giving you time to adjust to the water and find your rhythm. There’s no rush—we work at a relaxed, mindful pace with breaks as needed.
Before we even get in the water, we’ll have a pre-session chat and creative planning call to align on your vision, styling, and any concerns. That way, when it’s time to shoot, you’ll feel calm, prepared, and fully supported.
This is your time to explore, express, and experience something truly unique.
How do I prepare for my underwater photo session?
Preparation is part of the magic. A few days before your shoot, drink plenty of water and get good sleep—your skin and energy will thank you. On the day of the session, avoid heavy lotions or oils (they can affect the water clarity), and eat a light, nourishing meal beforehand.
Bring your chosen wardrobe pieces, a towel, a change of dry clothes, and any makeup/hair items you may want. I’ll send you a checklist before the session so nothing gets forgotten.
Mentally, just come with an open heart. There’s no pressure to “perform”—this is an experience of self-expression, play, and trust. We’ll create something beautiful together.
Can I wear makeup? What about my hair?
Yes! Light, waterproof makeup can enhance your features underwater—but it’s totally optional. Some clients choose soft definition (like waterproof mascara or tinted balm), while others embrace a bare, natural look.
For hair, soft styles work best—braids, loose buns, or natural waves. Hairspray and stiff styles won’t hold in water, but the good news is: movement is your friend. Floating hair can look absolutely breathtaking in your portraits.
No need to aim for “perfect”—underwater beauty is fluid, dreamy, and real.
I’m not photogenic / I don’t love my body right now—will I still look good?
Yes. A thousand times yes.
You don’t need to be “photogenic” to be radiant. You don’t need to wait for the “perfect” body to be worthy of being seen. My work is all about celebrating who you are—right now, as you are.
With 20+ years of experience working with women, I understand how vulnerable it can feel to be in front of the camera—especially underwater. That’s why I create a gentle, non-judgmental space where you can relax, be guided, and feel supported every step of the way.
The result? Images that reflect your strength, softness, and spirit. You might even see yourself in a whole new light.
